I'm almost ready to launch the first working deployed version of this by
tweeting the url with the CODE hackathon hashtag:
http://www.when-ei.ca
You can get a preview via
http://files.when-ei.ca
Has a nice design for scaling: all the switching from Canada map to
province maps is done browser side with JS and the 14 images are all
cached upfront. Its more responsive than google.
Server side of application is just a simple JSON response to provide the
hours/unemployment rate info.
That's handled through request.when-ei.ca or request-dev.when-ei.ca both
of which at the moment go to a development simple server on my laptop
here at skullspace. What I'm doing right now is getting an actual
production install of this up and running on the VM server right as a
last pre-launch step.
And instead of being a bad boy and using that AWS credit for cryptocoin
mining (I regret even floating the idea of abusing such a freebie), I've
used it for CDN hosting... www.when-ei.ca is a CNAME that goes to
Amazon's Cloudfront... which I had working a few minutes ago, down due
to a tweak of mine... (hence files.when-ei.ca as temporary URL for you all.
There is still much work that needs to be done before the 4pm deadline.
(less then 4 hours)
There's functionality I'd like to code:
* A "time machine" feature so this can actually use the historical
featured labour data from data.gc.ca -- right now, using the more
current data which I copy-pasted from a service canada web page table
into a spreadsheet and out to csv..., that's where I got the crown
copyright image files too
* Date projections based on hours per week instead of "you've done x
hours, need y hours more", perhaps even with a countdown timer
Folks could help with that, but there's also the need for making the
presentation better.
That's where many of you can come in.
Best way to help me out would be to clone
https://github.com/markjenkinsskullspace/whencanigetei or take a .zip
snapshot of my repository and help me make the HTML/CSS be more pretty.
Only tools you need are a web browser and a text editor, because all the
smarts for this are browser side you don't your own dev server or
anything, you can just make edits locally and your local copy is allowed
to query request.when-ei.ca and request-dev.when-ei.ca for data just
like the live copy can.
Won't be reading email all the time... so best to catch me in person or
on IRC (re-joining channel in a moment)
Somebody also mentioned graphics arts the other day... a logo wouldn't hurt.
And they have a place on the team page for youtube. Looking for someone
good with screen capture and video editing to make a demo real combined
with "hi my name is"
In person presentation at 5pm.
