This might inflate the cost and complexity of the project a bit, but
if your software supports marquee art, you could install one of these
car visor LCDs in the top:

Another option (which might make for an interesting hardware
workshop/hackathon/etc) is a big RGB LED array for a low res, low
frame rate version, similar to this:
