How do you accidentally install X? lol You should always confirm the packages which are going to be installed before hitting 'Y' like Homer Simpson in "King-Size Homer"[1]. Depending which distro, in RPM-based, you can usually do a clean rollback transaction. And in Debian-based, a tool called debfoster[2] is very useful.
