I had difficulty doing this on a Linux box (Mandrake 10.1) without X installed. I seem to remember Java had some trouble initialising Swing (even though I was running in headless mode).

Did you mean "slimp3slave" here? All I wanted to do in my set-up was have a headless slave player, and in the end I used a combination of slimp3slave and madplay, which worked very well (even got it to start up as a service when I booted the machine).


slimp3slave will take keyboard input for a variety of simple commands, so maybe it could be used for what the OP wanted?
