It works a lot better after you have scrobbled for a couple of months
and gotten a clue to your listening habits. If you have neighbors with
a large library you can randomly listen to their library (what they
have scrobbled) and you can listen the same to your music after you
have built up a library there. It's kind of nice sometimes just
starting it with your library on last fm not local and letting it play.
It's basically the same idea with friends and neighbors but you pick
your friends. Recommendations are picks that last fm feels you might
like after seeing your listening habits. It gets better the more you
scrobble. Loved ones are just songs that you really like and I think it
gives more emphasis to that song or style. Sorry I'm not more in depth
but I think I'm close on all this. I just use it mainly to keep track
of what I'm listening to as it's kind of interesting. My son throws
mine off a bit but he likes a lot of the same things as me. He's 16
and it's fun getting him into music.
