Can't help you with the first problem but with this one - is it losing connection to the server? What happens when you press right on the remote or rotate the knob? The first problem shouldn't happen anymore - old SlimServer installs and their associated firmware used to revert to full brightness when informing you that they lost contact with the server but I believe newer firmware defaults to a low brightness when contact to the server has been lost.
