In the single inexpensive amp department a couple good recommendations
are the AudioSource Amp100 and the Sonic Impact T-Amp (both the
original and the more recent 2nd generation model). Each is under
US$100. The AudioSource has an auto-sensing feature that puts the amp
into standby after it hasn't received an audio input signal for about 5
minutes. Standby isn't completely off, and it still draws something like
5w in standby. The Sonic Impact doesn't switch off, but reportedly only
draws about 1w when idling.

I have the AudioSource in my kitchen system and have been very happy
with it. Sorry, but can't help you with the multi-zone amp
recommendation.
