I have been backing up my Mac laptop to an external USB hard drive for about a year now. The hard drive has stopped working properly. I can see the files, but I cannot retrieve them to the Mac or copy them to another hard drive. When I try, the drive dismounts. It's my understanding that these external HDD failures are often associated with the enclosure and that the data often can be recovered. Is there a service for this and a way to tell if the data is recoverable?
