I built a PC and installed an e-mu 1212m soundcard that can output 24/192 http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?category=505&subcategory=491&product=9872&nav=technicalSpecifications to an external DAC.
Depending on the PC design, it could be small, low powered, passively cooled, external power supply, and your choice of soundcards. If you're truly worried about the e-mu digital out, you could always step up to a lynx card (may only do 24/96?) or an rme card. I use my e-mu's internal DAC with squeezeslave and ipeng, will probably eventually spring for an external DAC (when the money's flowing....)
