So, squeeeslave will come back from sleep properly if the machine is only asleep for a little while. Anything over "X" amount of time means it will not show up in the player list. That much I have confirmed through repeated sleep cycles. What I haven't done is timed exactly where the threshold is.
Here's he log file with "-dall" starting with a fresh boot and launch of squeezeslave, then putting the machine to sleep for a long while, returning without it in the player list, using the machine for a while and then unloading.
