Did you turn up the volume on the second instance to 11 with the web
gui?  By default it is only at 5 which you would not have heard.

Can you try setting both player volumes the same and test again?

My initial investigation into ALSA device sharing indicates that you
need to use the dmix device for it to work and requires changes to
alsa.conf or .asoundrc.
And for squeezeslave if the default devices' sample rate is not 44100Hz
then you need to add resampling to the dmix config as well.
