Are you using lossless on your portable devices ?
Apple is probably focused at portable devices and for these lossless
doesn't make much sense since:
1. You probably can't hear much difference on a portable device.
2. You probably don't have the network bandwidth to download lossless
files from iCloud to your portable device.
3. You probably don't have enough storage space on your portable device
for your whole library in lossless format.
So even though lossless makes sense as original format or streaming on
a LAN, it doesn't make much sense for portable devices or remotely
stored music files.
