It is not a permission issue. It seems it's more a window
manager/default device thing as you suggested. When I start the service
after logging in to the graphical desktop it works just fine. For now I
will just start it manually.

BTW would it be possible to add 24-bit sound support to squeezeslave? I
stream PCM from the squeezeboxserver and have 24-bit/44.1kHz files which
won't play properly with squeezeslave.
