You can use 3 different apps on iPad for cotrolling squeezeboxes.

I use SqueezePad and iPeng ( there is the free oficial app wich i have
not tried ).

if can accept to use another app and product for amp controll etc I
would recomend iRule app combined with iTach products i have replaced
all remote controlls for my complete home theater with this app.
ITach makes small networked "things" that have ir rs232 or relay
outputs cool

For controlling volume I have to switch app on my iPad, but thats
because i prefer the iPad app for controlling my Touch, I have emulated
the squeezebox ir remote in iRule , but the Touchs display is not really
visible on distance so feedback is poor.

For my kitchen I use powered fostex speakers and an SB3 there i think
the squeezebox own volume controll good enough and there is no amp to
controll , so iPad apps alone is perfect here.

My solution may not satify your spec completely, but I wanted to share
what could be done with an iPad
