Bingo. That was it. Either I did not see the drop down button next to "formatting" or I did not realize that the button would allow me to find options other than formatting. I'm not very good at rooting around on my iBook (obviously). It is a hand-me-down from my daughter and I use it only for running LMS. I still do not understand why it doesn't work right when I choose automatic start upon boot or login, but that does not really matter. It is working now and making beautiful music with my new Stirling Broadcast speakers. This squeezebox system is really pretty amazing, but everyone here knows that.
