Reviving a dead thread because I just opened up my eight-year-old
bought-direct-from-SlimDevices Squeezebox 3 and I wanted to correct the
assumptions. Mine has never been serviced and has that same whitish
residue, so it's not an indicator of previous service.

Unfortunately, I opened mine up because after eight years of working
great it started spontaneously rebooting over the weekend, and then was
about 5-10 seconds out of sync from my other SqueezeDevices (a Touch and
a Radio) when it came back up. Tried re-seating everything in a forlorn
hope of fixing it, but it's still constantly rebooting, so I guess I
either suck it up and buy a Touch for $600 or think about replacing my
whole system with a Sonos system. I'm genuinely sorry to have it die
like this, since it's really been a joy to use over its lifetime; I
guess I can't really complain, though, when I figure how much use I got
out of it over an eight-year period.

Well, I guess I could complain that Logitech didn't continue to support
the product line, or sell it to someone who wanted to try competing with
Sonos. ;)
