I like the ability to control a player "directly" via a remote control. I tried to get a simple IR to work (using a photodiode and the GPIO on the RPI), but was having trouble figuring out the details. It would be GREAT of the PiCorePlayer/JiveLite configuration could work with this out-of-the box... I went to the FLIRC dongle. It works well - I have a mediacenter IR Remote, and I configured the FLIRC to emulate the appropriate keyboard inputs to control JiveLite from the remote. The drawback is it is more costly than the photodiode, and it requires its own USB port, plus I was worried that it might draw more current than the RPi could provide via USB, so I use a powered USB hub (more stuff...).
