This has been discussed in the BBC iPlayer plugin threads. It is DNS
related. Due to the way HLS works it sends many chunks of data in
sequence. 
Because HLS support is a hack in Triode's iPlayer each chunk of data
requires a new DNS lookup. If you look through (or search) the threads
you should find further info and suggested fixes - one of which is to
substitute your routers IP address in the LMS servers DNS settings with
8.8.8.8 - Google's public DNS server farm often quicker than your router
and its relay to your ISPs DNS server.
It works with iPlayer on PC/Mac because HLS is implemented differently
and presumably the player software caches theDNS address.
