Thanks everyone - some good suggestions there. "Going RAID" is probably overkill for me (and it'd be hard to justify the expense to the 'Domestic Finance Director').
I did also think about buying something like a NSLU2 or Linkstation, adding a wireless card and giving it to a neighbour. Then I could do wireless rsync backups... but I would have to buy a them few beers occasionally. But it'll probably be the "rip to a 'new' directory then burn to DVD when it contains about 4Gb" method, as suggested by "clumsyoik".
