The last two posts miss the point.

The debian package of LMS doesn't work with the Ubuntu installed version
of perl.
Thus one is forced to install a standalone installation of perl for
LMS.
The Standard instructions for this fail to provide all the required
modules.
Thus one is forced to compile the missing packages, including the secure
socket layer for this bespoke version of perl

apt would install this package for the *original *version of perl, which
as has already been stated doesn't work, and is *not *fixed by adding
this module.

These kind of support miss-understandings would all go away of only the
Debian package came with a working instance of perl, contained within
the package.
