The knob was removed in the last Transporter iteration.
Well... we didn't have The Knob any more, but a ton of the other parts. And as The Knob was said to be the single most expensive part Logitech ever built into a device, they decided to clear the parts stock by selling the SE without The Knob. It wasn't a design decision (as clearly can be seen from the front panel...)
