Sounds to me like the problem lies with your server, rather than the network. You get behavior like that when the server is busy (either with Slimserver stuff, or other CPU-intensive applications). What's your collection size, hardware, and what other roles is your server performing?

I have not played it enough yet to see if this happens during music playback, however when it is just sitting there, it quite often pops up with a message saying it can't reach the slimserver, goes blank, tries to connect again and then gets connected and goes back to say the clock screensaver.
