Neil, It sounds like perhaps the left side of the page is not refreshing when you change the dropdown on the right hand side. The link behind the button that you're clicking should have a player parameter than indicates which one it will take action against. Have you checked that this is the correct player?
You don't say which skin and browser you're using - may be there are known bugs there. Also, some skins (Fishbone?) I believe set the default player with a cookie so you might have more luck with them.
