I wanted to report a great experience with the Audioengine 5 speakers.
They are available from the company's website
(http://www.audioengineusa.com/).

They are basically bookshelf sized powered speakers modeled after
powered studio monitors. They are particular well designed, I think,
and they sound surprsingly good. Design wise, all the ports and the
power amps are located in the left speaker. It gives you two audio
line ins (1/8" only), one on the rear of the left speaker, one on top.
Also, there is an AC plug behind the left speaker, and a USB charging
port on top. The right speaker is connected to the left speaker by
regular speaker wiring.

What is nice about this set of features is that it gives you ways to
power and listen to multiple sources (like a Squeezebox, DAP, flash
player, etc.) while using one AC plug. You can also charge your phone
or any other USB chargeable devices.

The sound of the speakers is very good, IMO. They give a good amount
of bass and the overall sound is very well balanced. There are a
couple other design issues that are also nice. The LED power indicator
is extremely dim, so it doesn't blind you, and the power draw at idle is
10W. I use these speakers with a Squeezebox in my bedroom that I use as
an alarm clock. They also have become the centralized location for my
digital audio players (I use a Cowon iAudio X5L and U2, and an iPod
Shuffle).

The company offers free shipping and a 30d trial period. I'd recommend
a trial for anyone wanting a bedroom system or something to work with
portable audio players.
