Bottom line, the Sun Ultra 5 should be plenty of horsepower to host and serve a sizeable collection.
It costs nothing to download the perl source and run it - on Linux, I just start the slimserver.pl from the command line and let it run in its own console. Point any browser on the network to http://host:9000 to configure it. You can run the Softsqueeze emulator on any Java-enabled platform on the network to test the server's playback performance. If it is satisfactory, order a real Squeezebox (or two!).
