Using latest CVS mplayer from Linux shell command line I can play 2 sky FM ordinary (not premium) stream OK (classical & guitar) and then play for a few minutes - I stopped the streams.
On Windows, with the AlienBBC version of Mplayer I got the same result as you did. On Linux with a 10-Dec-05 version of Mplayer, I got the same problem as on Windows.
