I decided to give this another go. Previously I installed the 6.5 beta without first uninstalling my 6.3 install. This time I uninstalled 6.3, deleted the old SlimServer directory, rebooted, and then installed the Sept 1st nightly of 6.5.
I no longer see my originally reported problem. However, I am still seeing frequent server crashes. I say crash -- what I mean is that the server will be up and running, and while I am changing server settings or player settings, the web interface stops responding and I find that the service has stopped.
Per your advice, I checked the event logs. Precisely at the time when the server stops, I see an event with the following information:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7036
Date: 9/1/2006
Time: 10:12:45 PM
User: N/A
Computer: CATFOOD
Description:
The SlimServer service entered the stopped state.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Any advice would be appreciated on how to further debug this. Thanks a lot!

If the service stops, there is likely to be some information in the
windows event viewer explaining what caused the stoppage.
Start->control panel->administrative tools->event viewer
you can paste what you find (relating to slim.exe or slimserver) here.
