it was so well-entrenched that every hardware and software maker is

The portability is a nice feature which is why it survives when
"better" compression routines exist.

Absolutely and it's the same reason ZIP has survived. Any minor improvements other formats made aren't worth the hassle of them not being supported everywhere.
