I've just upgraded from 6.3.1 to 6.5.1 and am experiencing somthing similar; only it's with FLAC images containing embedded cue sheets. 'Bug 1434' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1434), which was resolved over 18 months ago, best describes the problem. The gap is around 0.5-1 second, but it's definitely there.
Since the gallery view doesn't work for me either, and that's the only feature I even considered upgraded for, I'll be going back to 6.3.1.
