If you are looking for a minimal power drain amplifier, get a "Class-D" amplifier. They are essentially switch-mode power supplies with the input signal as a reference and the output connected to a speaker. Efficiencies run as high as 90%. These are relatively new and not many are available, but more and more are coming out every year as engineers get comfortable with the designs and the cost of the parts continues to drop.
Class A amplifiers are usually very large, heavy, VERY expensive, and waste huge amounts of power. Efficiency is no more than 50% maximum at full volume and they are much less efficient at lower volume levels. Class B and Class AB amps aren't too bad. They use little power at low volume levels so efficiency runs in the 50-70% range. Almost all commercial amps made in the last 30 years or so are Class B or AB. If you want to minimize power consumption, get a low powered amp.
