Thanks guys. I've removed the USB drive that has been getting the DWF message and reconnected it through one of the v1.1 USB ports. That was just over 12 hours ago and no problems so far. The other USB drive is still connected to the v2.0 USB card and no problems with it.
Interestingly enough - it does click occasionally, which might be a symptom of intermittent lack of power to the drive - which was suggested. Given that enclosures are dirt cheap - I might buy another one and see what happens. Thanks very much for your help.
