I've been able to do some further diagonsis. When skipping forward during Random Mix, the ReadyNAS has to add a song to the upcoming playlist. This is where the dropouts are occuring, as Mark speculated. Changing the number of upcoming songs really won't matter, as it has to fill up the buffer when it pulls another song for the playlist.
