A few of us have centered a complete music server around SlimCD. I use a small VIA-based fanless nano-ITX machine with SlimCD installed on a 1 GByte IDE flash card, with 256 mbytes of RAM. Attached via USB I have a 750 GByte HDD. In the attached photo, the HDD on the left is the Seagate 750 GByte drive, the nano-ITX machine is in the middle, and my Netgear wireless router is on the right. Anything making use of the server reaches it via the wireless router. The small device on the top of the server is a broadband cellphone data modem. It is connected to the server via USB, and it serves as a PPP connection to my cellphone carrier. It is active semi-permanently, and I have activated the Linux firewall in SlimCD, so it is also serving as an internet gateway for everything else I have, including when I connect my SB3 to Squeezenetwork, or surf the web with my wireless laptop. The whole thing is completely self contained and headless, and plugged into a cheap UPS - which has already been used successfully in a power failure:) I use putty/ssh for administration and smbfs to move newly ripped files to the HDD. I rip CDs on my wireless laptop. I have been running SlimCD on this hardware as my music server for a couple of months now without rebooting. I have had this SlimCD setup driving as many as 3 SB3s at once, with a different stream to each one - no sweat. I am very happy with this music server. -Ron +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Filename: Music Server from front.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3038| +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Music Server:* Nano-ITX computer running SlimCD + 750 GByte HDD -> Netgear wireless router *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36538 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
