For router with the dipole antenna (straight) - the signal strength is doughnut shaped with a hole in the middle ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_(radio)#Radiation_pattern If your SB is immediately above the router then you are probably in one of the worse spots for reception. Try angling both router antennae horizontal instead of vertical to see if it makes a difference.
