Try http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kmuw/kmuw.mediaplayer?STATION_NAME=kmuw&MEDIA_ID=632770&MEDIA_EXTENSION=mp3&MODULE=kmuw for the mp3 stream. My bet is that the mac parses the ASX file a bit better and grabs that, while SS gets the mms: stream... which is (at least as a guess) not using http as a transport.
