Some discoveries: Turning off Sophos AV whilst scanning made no difference.
Unselecting "use MusicMagic" in Server Settings (by selecting "Don't use MusicMagic" - MusicIP service still running), then scanning DID work. Even for a "new/changed" scan when I'd only changed one album, thumbnails of other albums reappeared (though the changed album's thumbnail was one of the few not to turn up, that might be for other reasons - foolishly I chose a new album whose thumbnail had never appeared). I infer that MusicIP support is the problem. I suppose I could try pausing the MusicIP service then doing a scan; but I think I'll do this on a much-reduced library first! (Hmm, but should MusicIP also be redirected to the test library? Might that not have other unfortunate consequences?) I'm still finding MusicIP problematic for other reasons, but I'm loathe to forego my MoodMixes now I've set some up!
