The DD-WRT firmware can turn a WRT54GL into a booster.

The term is actually "WDS" (Wireless Distribution System).

Note that DD-WRT can also turn the WRT54GL into a bridge, i.e. it
intercepts the wireless signal and implements a wired LAN on the other
side, connected via wireless to the rest of the LAN. This is
advantageous for the SB because the WRT54GL's antennas are much better
than the SB3's, it may get a good signal where the SB3 wouldn't - plus
the antennas are adjustable and upgradeable.

Other 3rd party firmware may or may not be able to do this.

The WRT54GL is usually cheaper than the equivalent booster or bridge.
