Hi

This is a feature request for something that I have been working around
for years.

I live in a couple of locations, due to work and have a couple of
friends who i have persuaded to buy Squeezeboxes. As we Swissies are
green (or maybe just cheap..) I let everybody connect to my server for
music/radio/etc .. this also solves the problem of syncing the whole
collection to my other dwellings..

What I wanted to do is have one central Squeezeserver and connect all
squeezeboxes to that server. This works fine for all of the
squeezeboxes in the house with the server, but the challenge was to get
all of the external players to work.

As I and most of my friends use Cablecom (Cable internet) the IP rarly
changes (only if you have a power outage for longer than 10mins) after
trying out VPN, which requires a PC to run or have some router with VPN
capibilities, which usualy crash. As i did not want to invest in Cisco
PIX/ASA boxes for VPNing (plus all of that overhead...) I went for a
differnt aproach.

I bought a WRAP device (www.pcengines.com) and installed m0n0wall on it
and run it as my main router where the Squeezeserver is. I have set up
NAT with rules for every location to only allow port 9000 and 3483 to
connect to the Squeezeserver. This works wonderfuly!! Songs start at
the remote locations neary as fast as at home.

The only drawback is that when there is a power outage, i have to redo
some of the rules. The other issue is that this can not be done with
XDSL which dynamic IPs that change every day.

What would be great is to have the possibilty to enter a FQDN instead
of just an IP for the Squeezeserver. This would not solve the problems
for XDSL.. but if the "server IP" changes, all of the remote
Squeezeboxes would not have to change the IP.

My second request would to have built in security for squeezeboxes. You
could then enter a password on the Squeezebox and just NAT all traffic
from any location to ports 9000 and 3483..

So .. howaboutit?
