The SB3 has a 24 bit DAC. If your music is 16 bit (e.g., FLAC copies of audio CDs), you've got a fair bit of room for adjustment before there's any data loss/degradation. You might check out http://forums.slimdevices.com/archive/index.php/t-19697.html
Audiophiles might cringe at this thought, but I expect if you've turned the SB low enough for it to discard bits, you probably would have lost those anyway to background noise. Give it a try, why doncha?
