Which then means that you can keep running slimserver when you turn off
your PC, which is probably the biggest advantage. As most NASs use less
electricity per hour than most PCs, running slimserver on the LS Pro
will probably save on your electric bill and be better for the
environment. On the other hand, you can expect library scanning and the
web interface to be considerably slower than on most PCs, but the music
will play just fine.

Since you need the storage space anyway, you could take the same
incremental approach I did when I bought my LinkStation HG a couple
years ago. Buy the NAS, but just use it for storage now and continue to
run slimserver off your PC. When you feel ready to hack the LinkStation
to install slimserver/squeezecenter (it can get complicated) do that
and see if you're happy with the tradeoff. If the NAS is too slow for
you, then just keep using it as storage. The only thing you will have
lost is that you paid more for a NAS than for an external USB drive.

Note that if you already keep your PC on 24/7, then you might as well
just get a bigger hard disk for it, because slimserver doesn't chew up
that many cpu cycles except when it is scanning.
