That's a VFD (vacuum flourescent display), not a string of LEDs, and it's the single most expensive part in SB "classic" (SB2 & SB3). A lot of users asked for (a) an SB at a lower price point than US$300 and/or (b) a graphical remote like the Sonos remote. Thus was born (a) the Receiver and (b) the Controller.
