Raid isn't terribly overkill when you consider the price (Not that expensive) vs convenience (you don't have to remember to do backups!). That being said, a raid mirror doesn't substitute for a good backup. It will protect you against hardware failure, but not against user error (Accidental deletion, overwriting a file, viruses, etc). So both a mirror and a backup solution are optimal. I'd go with the cheaper of the two drives, they seem identical in specs.
