here's my experience... I'm on osx10.5.4 and successfully running ss7.1
I've found that with the latest versions of ss I've had best luck with installing the software for all users and putting all plugins in: library-application support-squeezecenter-plugins. I used to put them in my user library but I now ignore that squeezecenter folder all together.
