As this is a broadening discussion... In my signature, I point to my LinkedIn profile that _is_ available over the web without being a member. Someone pointing to a profile that requires membership is either presuming that everyone "uses that tool" or wants to encourage it. (probably not the best assumption for any tool;-)
Sysadmins tend to be less social - I make efforts to get local professionals out to socialize and network, and it's hard. That is one reason I encourage the use of tools like LinkedIn because you get some of the benefits of in-person networking without having to actually talk to people. (That's a joke, son) ((Sorry - that's another joke;-) So two years ago I took a stand on LinkedIn and wrote "The LinkedIn Personal Trainer" as an introduction for those wanting more help than was readily available - and in the online networking space, LinkedIn owns the professional space. Facebook and Myspace own the social / teen / college space, and everybody else wants a piece of one or the other. If you're in a rock bank, you want to promote and cultivate a following on facebook and myspace. If you want to cultivate professional relationships, you use LinkedIn... Ok - so here's one article that I put on the blog that talks about networking at several different levels - I was upset at hearing about yet another person I knew needing to start to network because they lost a job... http://www.linkedinpersonaltrainer.com/archives/four-essential-networking-components-for-every-business-professional/ tiny so it won't break: http://tinyurl.com/bnxnn4 steve -- Steven Tylock The LinkedIn Personal Trainer http://www.linkedinpersonaltrainer.com http://www.linkedin.com/in/stevetylock
