I'm in the market for a load balancer as we move more and more of our
services to a web-based infrastructure. Protocols are many and varied,
including: LDAP, MySQL, IMAP, SMTP, and many HTTPS sites, mostly
Apache but some IIS as well.

If I could build a load balancer on OpenBSD I would be happy. I'm not
against spending some clams on hardware; but maybe not as many as some
of the high-end vendors want.

What is your experience with load balancing in a small data-center?

Software load balancing that have been mentioned:
Octopus
LVS/IPVS
Balance NG
Pure Load Balancer

Hardware Load Balancers that I have heard about:
Netscaler
F5
KEMP

P.S. No discussions about specific protocols please.
