There's a point in time where it ceases to be "heroic recovery" and starts to become "forensics".
It's going to be hard to find a single resource, just because so many of the details are going to be hardware specific. You can probably find great documentation on how to recover from failed hardware (or software) on a NetApp, for instance, but that's not going to be very much help on recovering from a failed PERC...neither of which will help at all on a filesystem-level failure. That last one is going to be your best bet for finding a single source, because filesystems are consistent across large swaths of hardware. If you spend the time to research the individual methods, there would be a large value to the community to establishing a single directory pointing to these (a wiki on serverfault.com would be particularly helpful). --Matt On Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 3:07 PM, Nick Webb <[email protected]> wrote: > All, > I'm looking for a book (preferred) or other resource that discusses the ins > and outs of hard disk and RAID recovery, such as: > * Tips, tricks, and best practices for how to access data from a drive that > was not backed up properly and appears to have failed or is failing > (especially ones with ext3 or NTFS) > * Methods to avoid if the data is critical, and sending the drive to a clean > room service is an option (i.e. what can I try that's safe, when should I > stop, etc.) > * How to recover from various hardware and software RAID failures (i.e. how > to re-assemble RAID sets that were improperly serviced) > * Special software that may be helpful > I know everyone should backup their important stuff, but let's face it not > everyone does and sometimes it's quicker to recover the whole OS with these > tricks versus getting an off-site tape back, etc. I'm well schooled on > proactive data protection, but I'm pretty green when it comes to heroic > recovery other than the basic file system corruption issues. > I've searched quite a bit for this kind of resource, but have not found > anything great.
