They use the same kind of technology as portable mini disk players
that have
optical connections as part of the analogue sockets. I haven't
tried using
the digital IO side of my Mac Book Pro but a friend commented that
he could
see the line in and out glowing red from the optical dater.
Very cool.

Subject: The new Macbook computer.
Hi!
Just wondering what you all thought of the specs of the new Macbook
machines which were released, impressed are you? I have to say I'm
extremely impressed but I have one question. The specs for this
machine talk about optical digital in and out, that's very nice as
far as it goes but what if you want to just run the computer between
standard analog line in and out, does that mean you have to get
various bits and pieces to convert an analog signal to a digital
signal so that your Macbook can record audio say with something like
Sound Studio etc? The specs don't seem to make any mention of analog
line in or out connections anywhere on the machine but apart from
that, the Macbook or the Macbook Pro is worth dreaming about for the
time being.
