Hey Holly,

Welcome to the list.
I haven't yet found a way to turn off auto-completion in the location field but 
you can do the following as a work-around:
After typing Command-l to open the location window, press space bar, which will 
delete the highlighted text in the edit field. Then start typing your URL or 
just www dot whatever and Safari will not auto-complete it because there's a 
space at the beginning of the character string. Hope that works for you.
