The problem with safari and ftp is that by default (if you have group
like items turned on) it puts the entire directory structure into a
single group item that you have to interact with, then interact with
the text again (if I remember correctly) to get into the list of
files. It's kind of confusing at first, but makes sense after you
get used to it.
As for the suggested finder command-k option, I have had very little
success using this method. Finder always goes busy, and remains so
until I relaunch finder.
