I can't help but cann offer a bit of perspective for what it's
worth. I've ggot two hp scanners here. one is at least 10 years old
and the other is 4 and they are stilll going strong.

Hi Everyone
Well, my Canoscan Lide 500F--which I've used pretty much daily for
the past year and a half--finally gave out, so I'm looking for a new
scanner. There's no question about getting a Canon Lide series again,
I'm definitely getting another one. I just have some questions about
the Lide 60 that's been discussed here.
1. In what orientation do you place the paper on the scanner,
portrait or landscape? I've used three different models of the Lide
series--the 30, 80, and 500F. The 30 and 80 used portrait orientation
but upside down. I didn't mind the upside down part. The 500F,
however, had the page oriented in landscape (sideways) orientation,
which caused some annoyances, such as larger books not fitting
completely on the scanning surface. So, how is the Lide 60 in this
regard?
2. Is the USB connection on the front or on the back? This sounds
trivial, but the 500F had it on the front (or side, depending on how
the scanner was oriented), and thus sometimes the cable got to be an
annoyance, whereas the 30 and 80 had the connection on the back and
out of the way.
3. How sturdy is the scanner? This was one thing I really liked about
the 500F--it felt structurally sound, whereas the 30 and 80 felt a
bit fragile. In truth, I probably don't even have to worry about this
since the 30 and 80 both lasted a long time, despite me carrying them
around every day.
Thanks
